NAME SIGNIFICANCE

不死 — Fushi

  • Japanese meaning : immortal, eternal life. This word may be derived from the phrase 「不老不死」, which means “perpetual youth and longevity".

  • English meaning : an animated woman. 'Animated' here refers to the act of being emotionally expressive, however the fact it can also be read as a 2D/3D artistic term is a cool coincidence!

不 — Fu

  • Japanese meaning : not, un-, non-. It's also a shortened form of "fufufu", which is a common expression of laughter (particularly associated with women) depicted in Japanese animated media.

  • 'Fu' was originally derived from 'Fu Dog' → 'Foo Dog' (the English slang for 'Komainu' (JP), Shishi (CN), or Guardian Lion). Funnily enough, it lined up very well with my personality and lore!

死 — Shi

  • Japanese meaning : die, death. This suits the idea that female Foo Dogs are 'Yin', associated with spirits and the metaphysical. It's also another cool lore reference!

石獅 — Shishi

  • Chinese & Japanese meaning : guardian lion, more commonly used in China and less commonly used in Japan as an alternate word for 'komainu'.

  • May be vocally misconstrued as “xìe xìe”, the Chinese word for "thank you".

  • "Shishishi" is another expression of laughter in Japanese animated media, although its usage isn't as prevalent as "fufufu".

石 — Shi

  • Japanese meaning : stone. This refers to the material that many komainu in Japan are carved from.

  • An alternate reading of this word is "seki" (セキ), which means gate, barrier. This suits the aforementioned connection to 'Yin' regarding spirits and the metaphysical, and is yet another lore reference.

獅 — Shi

  • Japanese meaning : lion. Pretty self-explanatory.

石獅不死 — Shishi Fushi

  • The literal Japanese translation is immortal stone lion.

  • In my lore, 'Shishi' acts like a clan name which denotes all Yokai who are Komainu. The second name (in my case 'Fushi') is typically given to a Shishi by the god of the shrine it protects and serves.

  • Gore of Fushi is fine (e.g. anything from mild injuries to body horror), but please avoid sensitive topics that are malicious or nonconsensual in nature.

  • In the event anyone wants to create sexual or NSFW art of Fushi, she can't stop you from doing so (although preferably you'd keep it tasteful), but please bear in mind that she will not interact with this style of content. Please ensure your NSFW art is appropriately hidden / spoilered, WITHOUT using the #fooshiart tag, so the risk of Fushi's general community seeing it is minimised.
